face pics

When Sean Leffers first approached me about creating a series of portraits in black and white, the goal was for it to be a love letter to West Hollywood, a celebration of gay, queer, and trans people and our allies. In short, a celebration of “the community”.

The digital revolution from the start brought queer people together, whether through social media or through other apps. And as anyone who has used one knows, “face pics” are almost always required.

The impact of ongoing global events has expanded my own notion of community, which in turn guided the series into new directions. The physical restrictions of the last year also allowed for new connections to be forged in the digital realm. Because ultimately, community is not defined by place – it’s defined by people.

This series of photos reflects the vibrant and diverse people who make up our community, and my gratitude to count myself as one of its members.
